Power Supplies RFMD ramps PAs for ET revolution

RFMD has commenced high-volume production of power amplifiers (PAs) and power management integrated circuits (ICs) incorporating envelope tracking (ET) technology.

This follows yesterday’s announcement form Texas Instruments that it was introducing its first envelope tracking power supply for LTE mobile phones.

ET-enabled PAs are continuously adjusted so that the amplifier operates at maximum power efficiency. The result is lower battery power consumption. This is particularly attractive in 4G LTE mobile platforms, which operate in multiple frequency bands and require a number of separate PAs.

RFMD said its PA provides full ET compatible coverage of all FD-LTE and TD-LTE bands (1-14, 17-21, 25-28, 38, 40, 41, and 44).

Its envelope tracking-enabled PAs include RF7389 and RF8085 multimode, multi-band PAs, the RF80xx(i) family of 10 single-band satellite PAs, and its RF8081 ET power management IC.

“This volume ramp-up of a broad family of envelope tracking-enabled products puts RFMD at the forefront of the ET revolution,” said Eric Creviston, president of RFMD’s Cellular Products Group.

Texas Instruments has announced its first envelope tracking power supply chip, which it claims will cut power consumption in 3G and 4G LTE multi-mode, multi-band RF power amplifiers (PAs) used in smartphones and tablets.

This will see it competing in the 4G smartphone market against UK-based envelop-tracking silicon supplier, Nujira.
