Being the third defensive line, the embrasured watchtower is riddled with arrow holes, which is used for watching and shooting. Between the embrasured watchtower and the central building lies the bulwark, the fourth defensive line, which plays the role of catching enemies after they invade into the city. It is out of question that the fifth line is the central wall gate. It is not easy for the enemies to break the above fifth defensive lines.

Apart from the tightly defensive city gate, turrets are built in the four corners of the city wall as well, which is used to assist the city gates to watch and defense the invading enemies. Outside the city wall, piers are set every 120 meters, which are in the same structure with city wall, 20 meters in width, 12 meters outer the wall. There are 98 piers and 5984 crenels on the city wall, which are sawteeth-shaped around the wall. On each pier sits 3 watchtowers, where troops can be stationed. On the city walls and piers stand the parapets, which could not only refuge for safe but also watch enemies. Therefore, the Xi an City Wall is of value for studying the urban construction and history in feudal society of China
